WIZARD
Unauthorized arcane practice is illegal in Nuxan. The Cerberus Assembly and the Luxon church hold licensing authority over formal magical study, and the consequences for operating outside that licensing framework range from public censure to the kind of disappearance the Court of Dust handles through its East Dregs infrastructure.
A PC Wizard has one of three situations: licensed through official channels, which comes with obligations and surveillance; operating in secret, which is a daily survival calculation; or self-taught from excavated Aeorian texts, which means their understanding of magic is built from fragments, reverse engineering, and experiments that occasionally produce results nobody intended. All three are viable. None of them are safe.
Magic scarcity shapes which schools survive as living traditions. Some schools require institutional infrastructure that mostly stopped existing along with the gods. Others are deep enough, conceptually, that knowledge of them didn’t survive the collapse intact. What remains are the schools where common practice, necessity, or specific institutional sponsorship kept the tradition alive — and as students dried up, even those consolidated.
Available Schools
What were once eight schools of magic survive as three broad academic disciplines, each having absorbed the fragments of a related school as the academies contracted. Alongside them, four traditions that were never academic schools persist on their own terms.
Academic Schools
- School of Dunamancy (merges Chronurgy + Graviturgy, EGW) — Time and gravity as two faces of dunamis. This one didn’t consolidate from scarcity; it survived because the Kryn Dynasty and Cerberus Assembly keep it under lock. The subtle fate-and-mass tradition endures; the old gravity-crushing craft is gone.
- School of the Unseen (merges Divination + Illusion, PHB 2024) — Perception magic, sanctioned and not: seeing hidden truth and showing what isn’t there. The intelligence discipline. The Court of Dust wants its augurs; the Garrotte Line wants its illusionists.
- School of Ruin (merges Evocation + Necromancy, PHB 2024) — The magic of ending things: raw destructive output and death, one feared trade. A glass cannon that feeds on the deaths it causes, relevant everywhere the Shadowfell leaks dead into the world.
Separate Disciplines
- School of Bladesinging (PHB 2024) — Elven arcane-martial tradition, not an academic school. In Nuxan, the foot soldiers of institutional power — Cerberus Assembly muscle or Kryn Dynasty assets operating under Assembly cover.
- School of Blood Magic (Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn) — Blood as fuel and sensor, the Claret Orders’ craft. Resilient because blood is always available; learning it means contact with the Orders.
- School of Occultism (The Crooked Moon) — Forbidden knowledge from beyond the universe, accessed through a risk-escalating intrusion mechanic. A hedge tradition by nature, not an institution — the same Far Realm-adjacent fabric the Eldrazi war left scarred.
- School of Biomancy (Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting) — Biological self-modification through surgical practice, the body as laboratory. Impossible to hide; in Bassuras, a Biomancer is a recognizable kind of person, and that recognition runs both ways.
Lost Art Feats
Consolidation cut several high-level techniques from the old schools. They survive as Lost Art Feats — homebrew feats, gated by level and school, that let a wizard reconstruct a discarded feature at the cost of a feat. This is the mechanical face of the self-taught, Aeorian-text path.

These remain fully unavailable:
| School | Source | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| School of Abjuration | PHB 2024 | Academic institutions capable of teaching it are largely controlled and rare |
| School of Transmutation | PHB 2024 | A conceptually deep school whose knowledge didn’t survive institutional collapse intact |
| School of War Magic | Xanathar’s Guide to Everything | No dedicated war-mage tradition in Nuxan; combat-integrated casting is covered by Eldritch Knight, Echo Knight, and Spellslinger |
| Order of Scribes | Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything | Magic kept in books is dangerous by nature where arcane texts are contraband |
| School of Philosophy | The Crooked Moon | Flavor doesn’t fit the setting |
