School of the Unseen
Wizard Subclass — Heretics of the Old Gods homebrew, merged from the Diviner and Illusionist (PHB 2024)
Overview
Knowing the hidden truth and hiding the truth are one skillset. As the academies contracted, the two schools that dealt in perception — Divination and Illusion — folded into a single discipline built for intelligence work. An Unseen wizard sees what others can’t and shows others what isn’t there. The Court of Dust recruits them as augurs; the Garrotte Line values them for reasons it doesn’t discuss. In practice they are the same profession: the person in the room who knows more than they should, and can’t be trusted about any of it.
Features
Foresight and Misdirection (Level 3)
Portent. When you finish a long rest, roll two d20s and record the numbers. You can replace any D20 Test made by you or a creature you can see with one of these foretelling rolls — before the roll is made, and only once per turn. Each roll is used once; unused rolls are lost at your next long rest.
Improved Minor Illusion. You know the Minor Illusion cantrip. When you cast it, you can create both a sound and an image with a single casting. If you already knew Minor Illusion, you instead learn one additional wizard cantrip of your choice.
Expert Divination (Level 6)
When you cast a divination spell using a level 2+ spell slot, you regain one expended spell slot. The regained slot must be of a lower level than the one you expended, and can’t be higher than level 5.
The Third Eye (Level 10)
As a Bonus Action, choose one benefit, lasting until you start a short or long rest. You can’t use this again until you finish a rest:
- Darkvision out to 120 feet.
- Greater Comprehension: you can read any language.
- See Invisibility: you can cast See Invisibility without expending a spell slot.
Illusory Reality (Level 14)
When you cast an illusion spell using a spell slot, you can choose one inanimate, nonmagical object that is part of the illusion and make it real, as a Bonus Action while the spell is ongoing. The object stays real for 1 minute and can’t deal damage or impose conditions.
Note on the Lost Curriculum
Two capstone techniques of the old schools were cut in the merge and survive only as Lost Art fragments: Greater Portent (three foretelling dice) and Illusory Self (a reactive illusory duplicate). An Unseen wizard who wants either must reconstruct it.
