Vecna
What the Faithful Believe
Vecna, the Whispered One, is a Betrayer God and god of secrets, undeath, and hidden knowledge. Unlike the other Betrayer Gods who were Creator deities from the original pantheon, Vecna was a mortal archmage who became a lich during the Age of Arcanum, ascended to godhood in the time of Vox Machina (~810-812 PD), and was subsequently sealed behind the Divine Gate by those same heroes. His ascension was only the second time in Exandrian history that a mortal attained the power of a god.
Commandments: Learn all you can, and keep hidden that which you know. Reveal what pieces you must, but never the whole. Express and cultivate the evil within yourself, and in doing so, recognize it in others to exploit them for your own benefit. Seed the ruin of all who worship other deities, until only those who kneel before the Whispered One remain.
Worship & Practices
Cultists calling themselves the Remnants are scattered secretive sects across Exandria. All Remnants remove their left eye (and some their left hand) as a symbol of devotion. They wear dark iron pendants with four prongs pointing upward over a single loop. Cultists give Vecna offerings of secrets and unwilling souls to gain his favor, learning the deepest secrets and keeping them hidden. They recognize evil as a virtue, cultivating it and encouraging others to express it.
The Remnants operate in extreme secrecy, rarely building alliances, wishing to remain an unexpected threat. Three known sects: the Unveiled Sight (seeks arcane lore in the Planes for Vecna’s resurgence), the Devouring Blood (assassins using necromancy in the field), and an unnamed third sect.
Perceived Powers
Dominion over secrets and undeath. Worshippers gain knowledge of hidden things and power over the undead. At his most powerful, Vecna’s divine form could reshape reality — he was second only to Tharizdun and Predathos in power and threat level.
Tensions with Rival Faiths
Vecna has an especial enmity with The Raven Queen (Matron of Ravens), as his command of undeath and his survival as a lich were direct violations of her domain over death and the dead. At the gods’ final meeting before the Rites of Catatheosis in 843 PD, Vecna attended but stayed apart from the others, observing from a distance; when asked what would happen to him, he declared “every mystery could be treated as a problem to be solved” — implying he anticipated his own exclusion from the mortal rebirth cycle.
Exodus Status
Vecna did not undergo the Rites of Catatheosis with the other gods. Sealed behind the Divine Gate in the age of Vox Machina and never reintegrated into the mortal world, he was carved out of their plan — at the 843 PD meeting, Imogen Temult specifically advised against letting Vecna take a mortal form, lest Predathos consume him. His fate was settled separately, in the events retold as the campaign’s deep history: Vecna was cast out of Exandria’s cosmology entirely and bound to distant Oerth, his tie to this world severed. He is not dead — he endures on Oerth — but he is gone from here, exiled rather than reborn or sealed, and with no part in the Exodus, because he was already gone when it came. The Eldrazi he raised as his instruments ended with that exile; nothing remains to aim them.
