BARD
In a world where information moves between factions, nations, and the cracks left by collapsed institutions, the people who can hold a room, hold a secret, or hold both at once carry real power. Bards in Nuxan are rarely performers in the purest sense — performance is often the cover, not the point. They work as intelligence operatives, labor organizers, archivists preserving what institutions want erased, propagandists for movements that can’t operate openly, and missionaries whose sincerity and instructions are not always the same thing.
Music and story survived the Exodus more intact than most institutions did. A tradition that doesn’t depend on divine sanction to function had a head start on a world that lost its gods.
Available Subclasses
- College of Dance (PHB 2024) — Movement as both art and signal. A Dance Bard’s performance can carry meaning to people watching for it while reading as nothing but spectacle to everyone else.
- College of Lore (PHB 2024) — Knowledge as a Bard’s primary instrument, gathered from wherever it can still be found — surviving texts, oral history, things institutions would rather had been lost.
- College of Valor (PHB 2024) — The old tradition of the bard who fights alongside what they sing about, carrying the history of conflicts that have no other chronicler.
- College of Swords (Xanathar’s Guide to Everything) — Combat staged as performance, with the performance doing real work. The line between showmanship and genuine danger is kept deliberately thin.
- College of Whispers (Xanathar’s Guide to Everything) — Psychological manipulation and identity work as a Bard’s core discipline. In a world full of intelligence networks operating under civilian cover, this tradition has obvious utility to more than one faction.
- College of Eloquence (Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything) — Persuasion sharpened to its most efficient form. Useful to anyone who needs to move a crowd, calm a riot, or close a negotiation before it falls apart.
- College of Creation (Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything) — A tradition built on the primordial song that predates structured divinity altogether. In a world defined by the gods’ absence, drawing on something older than them is its own kind of statement.
- College of Spirits (Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft) — Storytelling that conjures and channels the dead — not metaphorically. In a world with a thousand years of ungoverned souls accumulating in the Shadowfell, what answers when a Spirits Bard calls may not be what they expected, or who.
- College of Tragedy (Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn) — Grief turned into power, in a world still working through an abandonment a thousand years old. This tradition needs no translation here.
- College of Whistles (The Crooked Moon) — Ghostly companions summoned through specific melodic frequencies — a tradition particularly suited to a world where the dead are not as gone as they should be.
- College of Fleshweaving (Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting) — Biomantic surgery practiced as bardic art, reshaping flesh with needle and thread. A discipline that sits at the uncomfortable intersection of healing, transformation, and threat.
