The books a character can be built from in Heretics of the Old Gods. If an ancestry, subclass, feat, or background comes from something on this list, it’s fair game. Anything not listed needs a DM okay first.

Baseline is the 2024 rules. Backgrounds are how you pick culture (see Ancestries), and ancestry stat blocks are pulled from whichever book that lineage lives in. Where a book has both a 2014 and a 2024 version of an option, use the 2024 version unless told otherwise.


Core Ruleset

Player’s Handbook (2024) — The default. Every base subclass, the ancestries, feats, and the background-as-culture system all start here.

Official D&D Expansions (Wizards of the Coast)

  • Xanathar’s Guide to Everything — extra subclasses across most classes, plus feats.
  • Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything — more subclasses across most classes.
  • Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount — the Critical Role Wildemount book. Source for the goblinoid, dragonborn-lineage, and other Wildemount ancestries, plus the Echo Knight fighter.
  • Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica — Ravnica subclass content (e.g. druid).
  • Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft — gothic-horror subclasses (bard, warlock).
  • Eberron: Forge of the Artificer — the 2025 Eberron artificer book. Source for the Warforged (Aeormaton) and Changeling ancestries and the artificer specialists.

Critical Role / Darrington Press

  • Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn — Exandria-native subclasses across several classes.
  • Blood Hunter (2022) — Matt Mercer’s Blood Hunter class and its Orders.

Owned/DM-provided. Not on the standard SRD, so check with the DM if you don’t have access.

  • The Crooked Moon — folk-horror subclasses spanning nearly every class.
