The Weathered

Overview

The Weathered are not an organization. The word is a description — the oldest folk
recognition in the Hellcatch — for a practitioner of
Deshretu who has survived enough of the desert to be considered wise. No one
confers it; you are called Weathered by others once you’ve earned the word, or you
are not. There is no roster, no leadership, no hall, no banner. They cohere as a
tradition, not a faction — scattered across the Hellcatch and the desert reaches
of Nuxan wherever people have learned to outlast the flats instead of fleeing
them.

Origin: Folk survivalism older than Bassuras, older than the
Court of Dust — the practical face of Deshretu worship,
which has never had clergy or temples.

Symbol: None of their own. A Weathered who marks anything marks it with
Deshretu’s sign — the horizon bisected by a half-circle around a single dot.

They are distinct from Sandspeakers (see Sandspeaker), the most devoted of
Deshretu’s faithful, held to draw power directly from the desert. A Sandspeaker is
almost always Weathered; a Weathered is rarely a Sandspeaker. The difference is
devotion and power, not survival — plenty of Weathered keep no particular faith
and simply know how to not die.

The Discipline

What makes someone Weathered is accumulated desert-craft: reading weather and
ground, rationing water and heat, moving through the flats without dying to them.
The signature and hardest-won piece of it is the broken-cadence walk — a
trained, arrhythmic gait that never settles into the steady rhythm a purple worm
reads as prey (see Desert Crossing). It’s why a Weathered can cross open desert
on foot that would kill anyone else, and it’s the single most valuable thing they
know.

It is not for sale and not quickly taught. The walk takes time and repetition to
learn, and the Weathered pass it to people who’ve earned their patience — kin,
apprentices, the occasional outsider who has proven they won’t waste the teaching.
A party that wants to leave Bassuras on foot, without a rig, needs a Weathered to
either teach them or walk them out. Neither is bought at a stall.

Members

No fixed membership and no named figures yet. As NPCs, the Weathered fill a
specific role: the guide who can teach the broken-cadence walk or lead a foot
crossing, and a living link to Deshretu worship for players who want it.
